How to prepare properly for a knee replacement

Here are our top 4 tips for preparing for knee replacement surgery.

Move it before you lose it. Before you head into surgery, learn the exercises that you will be doing post-surgery. The two main reasons for doing this is 1) be aware of what’s coming after your surgery so that it’s less daunting, and 2) the muscles, joints and ligaments can start to adapt to the movements and make your rehabilitation faster.

Exercise.

No one ever complained about being too strong. Accredited Exercise Physiologists and Physiotherapists understand how to perform the muscle strengthening exercises you need without the side effects of inflammation and pain. So get some professional advice.

Educate yourself.

Ask lots of questions – the only silly questions are the un-asked ones. Its normal to be a little apprehensive about surgery – so ask as many questions (to your surgeon, GP, rehab team) as you need to to understand what’s going to happen post-surgery.

Set a goal…

and put the first step in place. What’s one thing that you have been looking forward to doing, that your knee pain has not allowed you to do? Play golf, do a hiking trip, go cycling? Whatever it may be, its time to start thinking about that first step now. Your rehab is going to take a while, but if you have a clear goal (and a date that you want to reach it by) then research shows you will absolutely recover faster.
