OT NDIS Functional Assessments
What is a Functional capacity Assessment (FCA) ?
Functional Capacity Assessments (FCAs) are comprehensive evaluations conducted by occupational therapists to determine an individual's abilities and challenges in performing daily activities. These assessments are crucial for National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) participants, as they provide detailed insights into physical, cognitive, and emotional capabilities, forming the basis for effective care plans.
Purpose of Functional Capacity Assessments
FCAs aim to identify areas where support and intervention are necessary, ensuring individuals receive appropriate assistance to enhance their quality of life and independence. They evaluate various aspects, including:
Daily Living Skills: Assessing abilities in tasks such as showering, dressing, toileting, personal hygiene, sleep, and nutrition.
Home Management: Evaluating capabilities in meal preparation, shopping, cleaning, laundry, and managing household finances.
Work and Study: Determining the impact of conditions on engagement in employment or educational activities.
Leisure and Social Activities: Understanding participation in hobbies, social interactions, and community engagement.
Process of Occupational Therapy Assessments
The assessment process involves several steps to accurately evaluate functional capabilities:
Initial Consultation: The occupational therapist meets with the participant to discuss their situation, needs, and goals. This can occur in person, via telehealth, or over the phone.
Detailed Evaluation: Through interviews and practical assessments, the therapist gathers information on daily routines and challenges, using standardized tests to measure specific abilities such as motor skills, cognitive functions, and emotional well-being.
Analysis and Reporting: The collected data is analyzed to develop a comprehensive report, which is crucial for planning interventions and support services under the NDIS.
Benefits of Functional Capacity Assessments
Undergoing an FCA offers several advantages:
Enhanced Quality of Life: By identifying strengths and areas needing support, tailored interventions can address specific challenges.
Personalized Support Plans: The assessment ensures that support services are aligned with individual needs and goals.
Informed NDIS Planning: Provides necessary evidence and reasoning for services required in NDIS plans or applications.

-
Any relevant information to help your therapist get a good understanding of your situation. This might include your current or previous NDIS plan and any reports/letters from other health professionals including allied health, general practitioners or specialists.
-
You do not need a referral to organise an FCA, however, if you have available funding through your NDIS plan, it would be recommended to utilise this.
-
Your therapist will chat with you about your condition and the impact it has on your everyday life. They might ask about services/treatment you have engaged in in the past and what has/hasn’t worked. You will then collaborate to identify your goals moving forward.
